Kazak Tribal Medallion Red

The Kazak weaving tradition of the South Caucasus — spanning the highland villages straddling present-day Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Georgia — is among the most architecturally bold in the oriental carpet canon, celebrated for its monumental geometric compositions, saturated vegetable dye palettes, and the raw graphic power that distinguishes tribal Caucasian work from its more refined Persian counterparts.

This piece presents a classic triple-medallion field composition on a deep madder red ground, with three vertically sequenced star medallions — the outer two rendered in warm gold and ivory with latch-hook serrated edges, the central medallion dramatically anchored in navy blue with pale ivory interior detailing and a central cross-star device — all surrounded by scattered geometric fill elements including stylized arrow-and-feather motifs, small floral rosettes, and reciprocal chevron devices that animate the open field without crowding it.

The border system is authentically structured: an inner light blue guard stripe carrying small floral repeats, a principal navy-ground band filled with the characteristic Kazak running-dog or crab motif rendered in ivory and gold, and an outer red guard completing the frame, while the outermost perimeter carries a repeating hooked-bracket device in dark navy on red — a hallmark of the Karachov sub-district workshop vocabulary.
