The Kazak weaving tradition of the South Caucasus — spanning the highlands straddling present-day Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Georgia — stands among the most prized expressions of tribal pile weaving, celebrated for its bold geometric vocabulary, saturated natural dyes, and an architectural clarity that distinguishes it from the curvilinear refinement of Persian court production.
This large-format piece presents three vertically stacked stepped-octagon medallions, each radiating serrated star forms inset with hooked geometric satellites, rendered in a field of deeply saturated madder red that anchors a palette of forest green, ivory, charcoal, and warm camel — a color combination characteristic of classic 19th-century Kazak production and faithfully reproduced here in new hand-knotted wool.
The field is animated by symmetrically placed hooked appendages and what appear to be schematic animal or bird silhouettes flanking each medallion, a totemic device common to the Borjalu and Lori-Pambak sub-groups. The border system employs a principal band of reciprocal stepped motifs flanked by narrow guard stripes of running zigzag and triangle forms, maintaining the kinetic tension that gives Kazak compositions their singular visual authority.
