The Kazak-weaving tradition of the southern Caucasus — spanning the highland villages of what is today southwestern Azerbaijan and Armenia — produced some of the most structurally bold and chromatically vital tribal rugs in the oriental canon, prized for their emphatic geometry, high wool pile, and the raw vitality of their natural dye palette.

This large-format piece presents a classical triple-medallion field composition: three oversized stepped octagons arranged vertically on a dark navy-and-ivory micro-checkered ground, each shield differentiated in color — the uppermost and lowermost medallions anchored in terracotta with sage-green interior panels bearing hooked crosses and stylized bilateral tree forms, the central medallion reversing the palette to an ivory field with a terracotta surround and a deep navy center diamond — creating a rhythmic chromatic dialogue that animates the vertical axis.

The spandrel spaces carry angular reciprocal hook motifs and geometric crab ornaments typical of the Borchalu and Lori-Pambak sub-tribal traditions, while the main ivory border deploys a confident procession of terracotta lozenge-rosettes with flanking geometric guards in olive and sawtooth slate. The fringe is intact and the wool retains a firm, lustrous hand consistent with a new production woven in the classical idiom.
