Kazakh Medallion Grey

The Kazakh weaving tradition — rooted in the nomadic pastoral cultures of the Central Asian steppe — is distinguished by its bold geometric architecture, saturated tribal palette, and exceptionally dense hand-knotted wool pile that has made these carpets among the most collectible of the Caucasian-influenced canon.

This new piece presents a slate grey open field of notable clarity, anchored by a large serrated ivory star medallion rendered in ivory, crimson, and apricot with a cobalt-centred octagon at its core; above it, a secondary palmette cartouche in saffron and blush rises toward the upper register, while scattered latch-hook leaf rosettes, stylized lotus heads, and hooked vine tendrils in olive, red, and blue populate the surrounding ground with restrained but purposeful rhythm.

The multi-band border system is composed of a principal register carrying alternating geometric diamond medallions in yellow, red, and blue against a cream ground, flanked by narrow reciprocal rosette guard stripes that contain the composition with architectural precision. The cool silver-grey ground lends this piece an unusually refined, contemporary restraint rare among tribal weavings of this tradition, allowing it to command a room without overwhelming it.
