Kazakh Triple Medallion Indigo Red

The Kazakh weaving tradition — rooted in the Caucasus and carried into Afghan workshops by migrant tribal weavers — represents one of the most bold and architecturally resolved expressions of tribal pile weaving, prized for its saturated palette, tight geometric draftsmanship, and the raw physical presence of its wool.

This hand-knotted piece, new and unworn, presents three stacked octagonal medallions arranged along a deep indigo field: the uppermost rendered in ivory and light blue with branching foliate forms, the central in a striking combination of madder red and gold with bold Lesghi-star geometry, and the lowermost in warm cream and sky blue — each medallion distinct yet formally unified by shared latch-hook borders and reciprocal hooked-leaf fill motifs occupying the indigo ground between them.

The wide outer border in Caucasian madder red carries a dense repeat of cross-medallion clusters punctuated by stylized floral heads in gold and turquoise, contained within narrow reciprocal-vine guard stripes. The wool pile carries the characteristic lanolin-rich lustre of high-altitude Afghan fleece, and the color register — particularly the cold indigo against the hot madder — reflects the synthetic-and-natural dye vocabulary of contemporary Afghan-Kazakh revival production.
