The Khal Mohammadi weaving tradition, centred in the Kunduz and Faryab provinces of northern Afghanistan, represents one of the most disciplined expressions of Turkoman tribal knotting outside the historical Ersari confederacy, prized for the intensity of its natural madder dyes and the resolute geometry of its gul repertoire.

This room-sized piece presents a field saturated in deep madder red across which a regimented all-over repeat of octagonal guls unfolds in midnight navy outlined frameworks — each gul resolved with a compressed star medallion centre in ivory-gold and punctuated by scattered teal rosette fillers that prevent the composition from reading as heavy.

The secondary motif vocabulary, rendered in the same restrained navy and teal palette, includes hooked latch-hook forms and stylised arrowhead connectors that thread the guls into a rhythmic lattice. The border system is classically tiered: a narrow reciprocal vine guard, a wide principal stripe carrying elephant-foot derivative forms in staggered navy and gold, and a further geometric minor band — all executing the characteristic Khal Mohammadi compression of ornament toward the lower end, lending the piece a subtle visual weight. The wool pile is densely knotted with a low-to-medium cut that renders the pattern with crisp, almost architectural resolution. This is a rug of serious tribal authority — its palette is too considered for mere decoration, and its structural discipline rewards the collector who reads carpets as cultural documents rather than floor coverings.
