Mahal All-Over Crimson

The Arak weaving district of western Iran — encompassing towns such as Mahal, Sarouk, and Sultanabad — produced some of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries' most robust village carpets, prized for their saturated madder grounds, tribal drawing sensibility, and exceptional wool quality drawn from the high-altitude pastures of the Zagros foothills. This hand-knotted wool carpet presents a dense all-over field composition in deep crimson, populated by a rhythmic lattice of stepped octagonal units enclosing stylized herati rosettes, serrated leaf sprays, and small reciprocal floral fills rendered in dusty rose, saffron gold, ivory, and accents of teal and cobalt — the drawing retaining the pleasingly irregular hand of village work rather than the rigid precision of city production. The multi-band border is anchored by a navy ground carrying a continuous repeating floral vine between narrow reciprocal guard stripes in gold and ivory, providing firm visual containment to the restless energy of the field.
