Malayer, situated in the Hamadan district of western Iran, produced some of the most characterful tribal-village weavings of the late Qajar and early Pahlavi periods, distinguished by their confident geometric draftsmanship, earthy undyed-wool palettes, and the particular tension between structured patterning and freely interpreted filler motifs.
This hand-knotted wool piece presents a warm camel and taupe field populated by a dense herati-derived all-over lattice, over which a vertical column of seven bold open-diamond frames outlined in apricot camel asserts a strong central axis — a layout typical of Malayer village production where the weaver imposes tribal directness onto classical Persian compositional convention; the surrounding field is animated with compressed rosettes, stylized boteh, and dark charcoal geometric filler elements, while the border system employs a restrained octagonal link-chain running guard between narrow dark-brown stripes, completing the composition with quiet authority.
The palette — raw camel, warm sand, deep charcoal, and muted taupe — carries the undyed-wool character of authentic village production, giving the piece a muted, archaeological warmth that reads as both archaic and entirely contemporary in a spare interior.
