Nahavand Medallion Crimson

The weavers of Nahavand in Iran's Hamadan Province produce tribal rugs distinguished by their bold geometric sensibility, saturated natural dye palette, and a directness of expression that sets them apart from the more courtly traditions of Kashan or Isfahan — these are rugs made close to the land, carrying the visual vocabulary of semi-nomadic Kurdish and Luri weavers who settled the Zagros foothills. This hand-knotted wool piece in new condition presents a commanding elongated hexagonal medallion rendered in cobalt blue against a deeply saturated crimson field, the medallion interior populated with dense tribal rosette clusters and a central lozenge cartouche outlined in saffron orange — a color accent characteristic of Hamadan-region work. The open field is animated by scattered geometric floral heads, angular cypress forms, and cross motifs in ivory and sage green, while the wide ivory main border carries a repeating geometric floral chain flanked by narrow dark navy guards that anchor the composition with authority.
