Ningxia Medallion Burgundy

The Ningxia region of northern China produced some of the most distinctive hand-knotted carpets of the Qing dynasty tradition, characterized by their restrained open fields, Buddhist-influenced cloud and lotus motifs, and a palette drawn from natural wool dyes of unusual warmth and depth.

This piece presents a generous open field in deep madder burgundy, anchored by two vertically aligned ruyi cloud-scroll medallions rendered in ivory and dusty rose — a compositional convention rooted in Ningxia's ceremonial weaving vocabulary — while the broad ivory border is articulated with alternating palmette fans, continuous scrolling vine tendrils, and a centered lotus cartouche at each terminus, with small geometric corner squares maintaining structural formality. The overall palette, moving between warm burgundy, aged ivory, and muted rose-taupe, carries the quiet authority of a piece conceived for contemplative spaces rather than decorative spectacle.
