Oushak All-Over Sky Blue

The weaving tradition of Oushak in western Anatolia spans more than six centuries, producing carpets renowned for their generous scale, painterly color temperament, and an unhurried, open-field composition that distinguishes them decisively from the denser court traditions of Persia.

This hand-knotted wool Chobi — woven in the Oushak idiom with vegetable-derived dyes — presents a warm cerulean blue field of notable clarity, populated by a loosely bilateral scatter of large serrated-leaf rosettes, abstracted vase and ewer forms, cross-and-finial devices, and angular botanical sprays rendered in saffron gold, charcoal, dusty rose, and warm grey; the palette carries the characteristic Chobi softness — hues that read as gently sun-mellowed rather than saturated.

The border system is well-articulated: a primary navy band bearing a continuous palmette-and-vine scroll is contained between narrow saffron guard stripes, the lower register further animated by a row of octagonal cartouches enclosing star medallions and floral vases. At 204×305 cm the piece commands a room without dominating it, its open ground and tempered palette lending an atmosphere of considered calm rather than decorative insistence.
