Tabriz Vase Floral Steel Blue

Tabriz, the ancient carpet-weaving capital of northwestern Iran, has for centuries produced rugs of unrivalled technical precision and compositional sophistication, its workshops drawing on a continuous court tradition that stretches back to the Safavid era and remains the benchmark against which classical Persian weaving is measured. This new hand-knotted wool piece presents an all-over vine-scroll field in a distinctly cool steel and slate blue ground — an unusual and refined palette that immediately distinguishes it from the warmer madder-ground Tabriz norm — populated by a rhythmic lattice of sinuous arabesques connecting detached palmettes, stylised lotus and vase blossoms, boteh-like floral pods, and multi-petal rosettes rendered in crimson, cobalt, ivory, gold, and burgundy. The composition maintains strict bilateral symmetry along a central vertical axis, with each repeat cell anchored by a prominent palmette or vase form from which subsidiary flowering branches radiate with botanical naturalism. The border system is classically layered: a wide main border carries alternating cypress-tree and flowering-shrub cartouches on a matching blue-grey ground, framed by narrow reciprocal geometric guard stripes in red and ivory that contain the field with measured formality.
