A Foundation for Living

The living room is the heart of the home — a space for gathering, relaxing, and making memories. And at the centre of it all is the rug. A well-chosen rug doesn't just cover the floor; it anchors the room, defines the seating area, and sets the tone for your entire design scheme.

But with endless options in size, material, and style, finding "the one" can feel overwhelming. Here is our guide to navigating the world of handmade rugs to find the perfect match for your home.

A properly sized rug anchors the furniture and unifies the entire room

1. Size Matters

The most common mistake we see is choosing a rug that is too small. A skimpy rug can make the room look disjointed and cheap.

The Golden Rule: At least the front legs of all major seating furniture (sofas, armchairs) should sit on the rug. Ideally, all legs should be on the rug for a luxurious, cohesive look.

Common sizes for living rooms:

  • **Small living room** (under 15 sqm): 1.7m x 2.4m — front legs on the rug
  • **Medium living room** (15–25 sqm): 2.4m x 3m — all seating legs on the rug
  • **Large living room** (25+ sqm): 2.7m x 3.6m or larger — defines the conversation zone
  • Pro tip: Before buying, lay painter's tape on the floor in the dimensions you're considering. Live with it for a few days. You'll almost always go bigger.

Hand-knotted rugs are durable enough for the highest-traffic areas of your home

    2. Material & Durability

Consider your lifestyle. High-traffic living rooms need durable materials.

  • **Wool:** The gold standard. Naturally stain-resistant, durable, and soft. Springs back underfoot and gets better with age. Ideal for families and everyday use.
  • **Silk:** Luxurious and shimmering, best for low-traffic formal areas. A silk rug under a dining table is asking for heartbreak.
  • **Wool & Silk Blend:** The best of both worlds. Wool provides durability while silk adds lustre and detail. A practical choice for living rooms that need to perform and impress.
  • **Cotton:** Casual and easy to clean, but less durable. Best for flat-weave rugs and layering pieces.

    3. Style & Colour

Your rug can either be the star of the show or a supporting character. If your furniture is neutral, a bold Persian or Tribal rug can add necessary warmth and character. If your room is already colourful, choose a subtle, monochromatic rug to ground the space.

    Three approaches:

  • **The Anchor:** A large, neutral rug that lets the furniture and art take centre stage. Think undyed wool, soft ivories, and tonal textures.
  • **The Statement:** A bold, colourful rug that becomes the focal point of the room. Everything else orbits around it.
  • **The Layered Look:** A large flat-weave base with a smaller, richer piece on top. Adds depth and allows you to mix styles without committing to one.
  • The best rugs are the ones that make you want to take your shoes off. Trust that instinct.
