Bakhtiari Panel Garden Multicolour

The Bakhtiari tribe of the Chahar Mahal va Bakhtiari province in west-central Iran has long produced some of the most exuberantly coloured and compositionally inventive rugs in the Persian canon, their garden-panel format evoking the ancient Persian concept of paradise as a walled garden divided into ordered plots.

This hand-knotted wool rug presents a classic Bakhtiari garden compartment field composed of approximately twenty rectangular panels, each an independent vignette rendered on a distinct ground — cobalt navy, forest green, madder red, saffron gold, ivory, and soft rose — populated with palmette medallions, herati florals, sinuous boteh forms, and dense flowering bouquets that shift in character from panel to panel, creating a tapestry-like visual rhythm that is simultaneously orderly and wildly varied.

The ivory lattice grid dividing the compartments is cleanly executed, and the wide outer border carries a confident madder and saffron vine-scroll with rosette punctuation, anchoring the kaleidoscopic field with structural authority.
