Mahi Tabriz All-Over Crimson

Tabriz, the ancient capital of Iranian Azerbaijan, stands as one of the supreme weaving centres of the Persian world, its workshops producing rugs of exceptional technical density and design sophistication that have commanded the admiration of collectors and courts alike for centuries. This large-format piece presents a full-field Mahi or herati all-over composition — one of Tabriz's most celebrated interpretations — in which the entire crimson ground is consumed by a rhythmic lattice of rosette diamonds, curved lancet leaves, and the characteristic fish-like curved forms that give the pattern its name, the repeat rendered with a precision that betrays a high knot count and disciplined loom work; a barely-discernible oval field orientation draws the eye gently to centre without imposing a formal medallion, while the border system is resolved through a commanding wide navy main band populated with alternating palmettes and fluid arabesque scrollwork, bracketed by ivory and powder-blue guard stripes carrying delicate vine and boteh motifs, the entire palette balancing warm madder and soft gold against cool navy and aqua in the calibrated manner characteristic of north-western Persian production.
