Moud, nestled in the Khorasan Province of northeastern Iran, produces rugs of exceptional fineness celebrated for their silky wool pile, jewel-toned palettes, and the signature Mahi — the herati fish-in-diamond lattice — that defines the region's most coveted classical tradition.
This large-format piece presents a finely resolved central medallion in ivory and saffron, its lobed form radiating arabesque pendants into a dense navy field blanketed with the characteristic Mahi all-over repeat rendered in sky blue, coral, gold, and rose against the deep indigo ground — a chromatic tension that gives the field an almost luminous depth.
The composition is contained by a structured multi-border system: a narrow reciprocal guard stripe yields to a broad ivory main border populated with alternating rosette clusters and floral cartouches, which in turn gives way to a wide crimson outer border carrying bold palmette medallions separated by sinuous vine scrollwork, the whole perimeter conveying a controlled architectural grandeur. The wool exhibits the characteristic Moud sheen — slightly lustrous, finely clipped — and the drawing of the Mahi lattice is crisp and consistent, indicative of a skilled workshop rather than village production.
