Tabriz, the ancient capital of Azerbaijan province in northwest Iran, stands as one of the most technically accomplished weaving centres in the Persian tradition, renowned for producing rugs of extraordinary knot density, precise draftsmanship, and a sophisticated palette that balances jewel-toned grounds with refined secondary hues.
This large-format piece — measuring 290x396 cm in new condition — is composed around a multi-lobed medallion of considerable scale, rendered in antique gold and midnight navy against a field of deep madder crimson that fills the ground with tightly interlaced Shah Abbasi palmettes, scrolling arabesques, and small floral rosettes worked in sage green, ivory, and muted pink; four corner spandrels mirror the central medallion's geometry, creating the characteristic Tabriz quartered-field tension between open ground and dense ornament.
The primary border carries a stately procession of reciprocal palmette-and-vine cartouches on a dark navy ground — a hallmark of formal Tabriz commercial production — bracketed by narrow gold and ivory guard stripes that contain the composition with architectural precision, while a flash of cerulean blue in the lower field quarter adds an unexpected tonal lift characteristic of later twentieth-century Tabriz workshop output. A room-commanding piece of formal weight and technical refinement, it rewards sustained scrutiny and suits spaces where considered permanence, rather than decorative novelty, is the governing intention.
