Chobi Ziegler Floral Sky Blue

The Peshawar region of northwest Pakistan has, since the late nineteenth century, refined the art of weaving classical Persian designs through a distinctly Central Asian sensibility — producing the so-called Chobi or Ziegler-style carpets celebrated for their naturally washed, muted palette and generous, open-field compositions drawn from Mahal and Sultanabad prototypes. This piece presents an all-over palmette and vine-scroll field in a notably pale, weathered sky blue — a ground colour achieved through careful vegetable dyeing that lends the surface a softly abraded, antique quality — populated with large Herati-derived rosettes, peony palmettes, and sinuous acanthus tendrils rendered in antique gold, brick red, sage green, and warm ivory; the field composition is contained by a multi-register border in which a principal gold-ground band carries repeating floral medallion cartouches flanked by narrow reciprocal guard stripes, the whole weave displaying the characteristically loose, slightly rustic knotting that gives Chobi pieces their relaxed, lived-in presence. The result is a rug of considerable atmospheric restraint — one that anchors a room without commanding it, suited equally to interiors of classical lineage or considered contemporary arrangement.
