Ziegler Mamluk Vine Scroll Indigo

The Afghan Ziegler tradition — revived in the workshops of northwestern Afghanistan drawing on the 19th-century Ziegler & Co. commissions for the Western market — fuses classical Persian curvilinear draftsmanship with the robust, high-lanolin wool of the Hindu Kush, producing pieces whose palette weathers to exceptional luminosity over time.

This new hand-knotted example presents a densely articulated all-over vine-scroll field in a saturated indigo ground of considerable depth, animated by Mamluk-revival palmettes in saffron and burnt sienna, pomegranate rosettes in crimson, and split-leaf arabesques rendered in ivory and olive — the whole composition organised along a bilateral axis that gives the field a ceremonial symmetry without rigidity.

The multi-band border is precisely drawn, carrying a reciprocal floral vine between narrow guard stripes of ivory dentil and scrolling tendril, framed by a knotted fringe that anchors the piece visually. At 159x213 cm the rug occupies the scale of a considered interior choice rather than a room-filling statement, bringing with it the particular gravitas of a design tradition rooted in Cairene court weaving filtered through Safavid refinement and Afghan craft.
