Mahal All-Over Medallion Grey

The Mahal weaving district of the Arak region in west-central Iran has long produced carpets of monumental scale and robust character, drawing on the Sultanabad tradition of open, painterly fields animated by flowing botanical networks — pieces prized by collectors for their chromatic generosity and architectural presence.

This large-format example presents an all-over field of staggered circular rosette medallions arrayed across a cool silver-grey ground, each medallion rendered in a distinct palette — turquoise and ivory, deep coral red and olive, midnight navy, and warm golden ochre — creating a rhythmic visual cadence across the 367 × 454 cm expanse without a central focal point, allowing the eye to travel continuously.

The intervening field is filled with a fine interlacing vine and leaf tracery that prevents any sense of vacancy, while the wide terracotta-red main border carries a dense reciprocating vine scroll punctuated by geometric hex cartouches in turquoise and ivory, flanked by narrow dark and ivory guard stripes that firmly contain the composition. The ivory fringe at both ends is intact and even, consistent with new production. A work of considered restraint and chromatic complexity, this piece commands a formal room without overwhelming it — a serious collector's carpet that rewards close examination as much as it satisfies at distance.
