Ziegler Sultanabad All-Over Mocha

The Sultanabad weaving district of west-central Iran, particularly the Ziegler & Co. commercial tradition of the late 19th century, produced some of the most influential carpets in the Western market — prized for their deliberately softened palettes, expansive all-over compositions, and an organic looseness that distinguished them from the rigidly formal court traditions of Tabriz or Kashan. This hand-knotted wool carpet presents a classic Ziegler-revival all-over field in a warm, streaked mocha brown — the abrash-like tonal variation across the ground lending an aged, painterly depth — populated by a freely scattered arrangement of large palmette rosettes, detached floral heads, serrated leaf sprays, and occasional vase motifs in burgundy, dusty rose, ivory, teal, and slate blue, all loosely connected by meandering coral-pink vine traceries; the wide powder-blue border carries an independent sequence of bold floral medallions and botanical sprays framed by narrow geometric guard stripes, the contrast between the warm dark field and the cool pale surround being one of the composition's most distinguishing tensions.
