Choosing a modern rug
Our modern rugs are made by hand, not by machine — most are hand-knotted in Nepal, India, Pakistan and Turkey, with a smaller selection of hand-loomed and hand-tufted pieces. That shows in the depth of colour and in the way the pile wears: a handmade modern rug ages well instead of flattening out.
For a living room, choose a rug large enough for at least the front legs of every seat to rest on it. Wool is the most forgiving fibre for busy homes, children and pets; silk and bamboo silk add a soft sheen that suits bedrooms and formal rooms.
Questions we’re often asked
What is the difference between hand-knotted, hand-tufted and machine-made rugs?
Hand-knotted rugs are tied knot by knot on a loom and can last for generations. Hand-tufted rugs are punched into a backing with a hand tool — quicker to make and more affordable, with a shorter life. Machine-made rugs are woven on power looms. The construction of every rug is listed on its page.
What size rug do I need for my living room?
Measure the seating area and let the front legs of the sofa and chairs sit on the rug. Around 170 × 240 cm suits a compact living room, 200 × 300 cm most condo and terrace living rooms, and 250 × 350 cm or larger an open-plan space. At our showroom at 141 Jalan Maarof, Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur, open Monday to Saturday 10am–7pm and Sunday 11am–6pm. Every rug on this page can be unrolled and compared side by side, and our second gallery is at Straits Quay in Penang.
